I replaced the Coolrails-neck with a Hotrails and put the CR in the middleposition of my Jackson PCS Dinky (maple body), and it's not as hot as I expected. Don't get me wrong, it's nice but not 'great'. I expected more dirt but it's actually very clean, not that much more output than the CR. Just a little more bass and mids.
Seems to give about the same amount of crunch as the CR...and I was looking for more.

That's odd, when I had a Hotrails it was too much output for me, far from sounding clean at all.

that is odd, my hot rail in the bridge is realy hot, infact its too hot for me.

hi guys, i'm looking to get the hot rails for my bridge on my mex strat. Gonna get it second hand so what are the things i should look out for? changing my pickups for the first time..

I bought it secondhanded, I don't guess the guy sent me the wrong pup?

My Coolrails had a baseplate the same size as the pup itself, I guess all CRs are like this, but the 'Hotrails' came with the 'extra-large' baseplate with 'lip' as I thought all old designed HRs had (had to cut it off of the HR to fit my guitar). It came in the normal plastic jewel-box but the info was missing. It only has a sticker on it with an 'N' (neck).

The overdriven tone is very sweet, probably slightly more crunch then the CR.
Could it perhaps be a Vintage rails instead? Definately a warmer clean then the CR.EDIT: Can't be the VR, since the rails don't make an edge in the middle (if I interprete the pics right), shall be a HR afterall. The rails seem to be slightly thinner then those of the CR, but this might differ in all pups I guess?

Sure it's not wired split?

green wire to ground, black to switch, white and red solded together.

The Hot Rails neck pickup is only a bit hotter than the Cool Rails neck pickup, unlike the bridge Hot Rails which is considerably hotter than the Cool Rails bridge.

The HR neck is a bit warmer than the CR neck.

Yep..if you want mondo output, consider a CoolRails Bridge or a Hotrails Bridge if you want to go completely over the top

How difficult was it for you to cut off the lip? What did you use?

takes about 5 minutes with a Dremel Cutoff Wheel

What if one doesn't have a dremel?

a little more primitive I guess...a grip (?) to cut electricity-wires...and a file to cover it up

less then 5 minutes here So damn, following the rules isn't always that good...neck for a neck, bridge for bridge

I think you expected the hotrails neck to sound like you would put the hotrails BRIDGE version at the neck.
Of course the hotrails bridge is a very hot pickup, but for a neck-pickup it must have less output, or it would sound too muddy.

It depends on the guitar and the setup, of course, but I tried a Cool Rails (bridge) in the neck, and it was ice-picky and lifeless. That same pup, moved to the bridge, has become one of my favorite pups.

Yep, it's an all-maple body and the CR was waay too cool (liturally), the HR is warmer.
