I'm going over to Sam Ash on saturday to buy a guitar for my 12 year old nephew who I'm going to teach, he needs to get a electric with a small neck with NO FLOYD(that would be the worst thing ever for a begginer) and a price range from $200-300. I was thinking ibanez because of there small necks, does anybody have any other ideas? Just nothing too radical.

Does Sam Ash carry the new Squires?

Try and get a used MIM Fender Strat or Tele (strat seems to be the choice for beginners). Ibanezs have thin necks, but they are also quite wide, and it may be difficult getting one in that range without a floyd. Just make sure you put it through its paces and make sure it isn't a dog. MIMs are great, but I've played a few ones that weren't so great. Good luck with that.

Holy **** Kac i was just thinking of those new squires. have u tried any of them out bc they look ****ing cool?

this is the ibanez i was looking at
has anyone tried it?

Those Ibanez Wizard 2 necks have a wider nut widths. You're better of with a Squier Tele IMO.

Yes, I have tried those new squires, and like 'em a lot. The Squire '51 is very affordable, easy to maintain, sounds decent, and looks pretty kool. Those squires should be fine for someone with a smaller body.

Rock On!!!!!!!!!

I'd get the '51 for him, it's a great guitar at a good price and won't be such a bother as the RG.

Heh, I pretty much had a floyd for my 1st guitar, but my TRUE 1st guitar had a techtonic. Floyds ain't that bad, just have to have a little bit of inteligence. And another 1 for the squier 51, I can't possibly think of a better starters guitar.

Because I just bought Mephis' 51 I will recommend that The ones I played in the store were quite nice. Or any newer squire for that matter (they seem to have jumped up and decided to make decent guitars in the last year or so... I remember playing the first affinity strats way back... uggh)

slade

Please dont taint him.
Get him buckers, none of that single coil tele crap. :P

uggggg.... another unenlightened kid that plays nothing but MXPX on the guitar! Some day he will learn. LOLJust messin with ya buddy!! But Teles rule!!

I actually played a Squier the other day that was FANTASTIC!!!

Looked like a satin finished version of the Carvin California carved top.

Played super nice....even with the stock pickups(Duncan Designed!); but of course an upgrade to the electronics amp; p/u's would make it RAWK!!!!!

It might be a little more than you wanted to spend, but it seemed like a super nice axe. I don't recall the cost but it was in the $400 range.

One of these...the M80:
I played an amber one like on the bottom....the finish was much better in person. Nice all around feel amp; sound fine/no immediate need to upgrade, but simple enough to do so.......you can teach him that to when the time comes

This is off the Sam Ash site....price of $419.00

i think a good starter guitar for that price might be something from rondomusic ... or something decent used ... from ebay, local shop, or a pawn shop

for small neck, you might want to look at something with a smaller scale, but my guess is that a 12 y.o. boy won't be too into a daisy rock ... might be outta that price range anyway, not sure

good luck

A used MIM might be the best way to go.

Easy to mod amp; easy to work with from the start.

Junior is 13- going on 14. He likes my Tele most out of all the guitars around the house. It's not 3/4 or anything, he's just got a strap that's adjusted for him when he plays it.

Maybe the guy just wanted his kid to bend strings easier? But then again, do you teach full bends to a beginner? Oh well...

I think you need to get him something with a short scale and a smaller nut width than the '51. The '51 also has a pretty fat neck and while it's no 50's Gibson baseball bat I still think it would be too much for a little guy. After looking around I think the Squier Jagmaster would be a damn good choice. 2 humbuckers, vintage style 6 screw tremolo, 24quot; scale, and a nut thats between 1 5/8quot; and 1 11/16quot;. I can't think of anything else better for $250.

I'm probably going to get him one of the new squires ,probably the Jag, thanks for all your help.

My number one pick would be an MIM strat or tele. If it plays and intonates well, it could be a decent guitar that the kid could enjoy for a long time. I regret buying a cheapo ibanez for my first guitar-I should have gotten at least an MIM strat because I simply cannot handle that thin of a neck, and it looks like an obese SG.(Gax70)

If the new squiers are as good as everybody says they are, go for it.
