I tried this lovely amp at my local (guitar)dealer. WoW! What a sound! On the note on top of it, it was written quot;with improved tubes, speaker and cabinetquot;, but my god, it's the best amp I've tried for months (better than the DRRI on clean sound. I can't understand why). I've started on my summer job, in order to earn enough cash...
funny you should have that experiance. I recently went into a small, upscale guitar store where I played thru the top line fender amps. Then the salesmen plugged me into an old 68 vibrolux? it had 1 new celestion and 1 new webber and the same old transformer and it destroyed the new fender amps. Wile the new fender amps were bright and responsive, the older fender had a wonderful thick punchy midrange that we could not make the new fender's sound like.
Now I know why I like Hendrix's quot;we gotta waite till tomarrowquot; song. cuz its that same tone. no pedals, no problem, just plug in and you get that tone. Ive never heard a clean tone sound that good. now I know what clean sound I realy like. Of course they sold the amp in like 3 seconds. I went back the next day and it was gone(of course )
68 is silverface, if you really liked that amp you can get it for fairly cheap on ebay.
The HRD has the sweetest cleans of any production amp in it's price range.
You really can't compair it to a 68' Vibrolux tho. kinda like putting a
68' Shelby up againist a 05' GT Mustang. Like the new Stang The HRD
is Modern Vintage. It may lack the mojo of a 60's Fender Tube amp
But IMHO Fender did a good job Trying to capture some of the Mojo
of the older amps.

and your completely right, you cant compare them but oh what a sweet thick midrange tone it had. Ime not knocking the newer amps, had I not heard that 68 vibrolux I would have been happy and never known the differance. But now the genie is out of the bottle and I gotta have one. Some of it is due to the speakers being upgraded but I think mostley it was the larger transformer of the earlier vintage amp that made the tone so much more thicker, and sweeter. Ah but who knows, if you had the new duncan pedal would it thicken up the tone that much and make it almost as sweet as that 68 vibrolux? hmmmmm..... does make you wonder.
I have a Fender HRdx, and I am in the process of building a cab that is VERy similar to what you have in the LE... I also did several mods in accordance with suggestions from this website... it has great info about tube amps in general, and some specific to the HRDx's....
from : localhost/studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/
I also have a Weber in mind to increase the headroom... Oh yeah... that is my thing... I have foresaken the tube saturation in place of the clean headroom!!!!!
That Maple cab, is it solid througout, or is it a maple cap?
Glad you enjoyed it, and I'd love to hear more about it...
Later,
Allen
