I'm Thinking of putting some new pickups on my ES-137 (HH). What would you recomend for Lead and rythem.
If you're going to play your amp clean and you have plenty of power (50 to 100 watts) I really like the 59.
The Duncan 59 is closest to the pickup that Wes Montgomery would have had in his early 60's Gibson L-5 and Joe Pass used in his ES-175. So I'm going to say a set of 59's for a Wes or Joe Pass tone.
If you look at some photos of Wes you'll see that he rotated the neck humbucker around so that the polepieces were facing towards the bridge. That indicates to me that Wes, like alot of players, felt that the alnico 5 Gibson Humbucker in his guitar was a little bassy and sought to reduce that by turning the pickup around.
However, compared to the 8.2K Gibson humbucker in Wes's L-5, Seymour underwinds the neck 59 a bit to 7.43K for a clearer tone with a little more top end. The bridge version of the 59 is about 8.13K...similar to a stock early 60's Gibson paf style humbucker.
The Duncan Jazz would also be a great pickup.
The Jazz is similar to the 59 but has just a touch less bass and a little more upper harmonics.
So a set of Duncan Jazz humbuckers would also be a great set.
Then there's the Duncan Antiquity and Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers. Those are alnico 2 humbuckers: more mids and less bass and smoother treble than the alnico 5 Jazz or 59.
Any of those four pickups would be my suggestion for a great jazz guitar.
My pick 4 jazz is Seths w/ 250k pots.
I'm kinda with Lew on this one. I'd go with a 59 bridge and a Jazz neck.
