I am looking for a cheap($200 an under) p-90 guitar. I have never used p-90s and after listening to some early Sabbath, i want to add one to my arsenal. What i have found is:

Squier Tele Custom II
SX GG1 JR
SX GG1 goldtop
Hofner doublecut

I own a Tele Custom with HBs and i am impressed with it, but im not sure if i want another almost the same model guitar. Ive heard some good things about the SX's but im not sure if i want to deal with Rondo ever again, and i dont know a lot about the Hofner except that its really cheap, and its gotten mixed reviews on Music 123.

Which one of these would you recommend?

That old Sabbath sound is those John Birch pickups.

Yamaha AEX-502. Looks nice, plays nice, and most importantly sounds nice. Just stuff some newspaper or something in those f-holes to elminate the hum and you've got yourself a killer P-90 equipped axe!

Even though it's got a tag of only $300 you're buying a guitar that sounds twice the price and in terms of build quality its just stunning to hold and behold for so little cash.

saw the hofner. looks pretty good for the money. haven't tried it though. not sure of the specs too. can't seem to find them on the hofner site.

just a suggestion. instead of buying a new guitar, swap the humbuckers in your squire for a set of phat cats and you have a p-90 equipped tele.

The Hofner is being spoke of highly on the Harmony Central forums. I might get it.

Actually i had thought of slapping a set of Phat Cats in the Tele, but i am starting to use it more and more so a new guitar is a better option.

Thanks for the responses and feel free to tell me more!

I'd go for the tele custom II. An outstanding guitar for the money.

I wanted to like the Tele Custom II. A local GC had one for $153 new a few months ago and I had been eying them in catalogs for months. When I finally got my hands on one, though, I was totally underwhelmed. Many of the problems with the feel of the thing might have been solved with some attention to its set-up, but it really oozed the worst sort of cheapness (something that I don't believe is true of all modern Squiers) and the sound left me scratching my head as well. It sounded okay under moderately heavy gain, suitably buzz-saw like, but through any number of amps, I was unable to coax useable cleans or lightly driven sounds. New pups would probably help, but since I was unable to find a single thing to like about this particular instrument, I decided that no price was enough of a bargain to buy it.

Just my $.02 and I leave open the possibility that I simply played a dud.
