Yeah, do you think the JB will do heavy metal a la Iron Maiden good? I know it probably won't be the same kind of tone as Maiden has, but will it still be cool? Has anybody here made a Maiden cover with a JB, or a song in the same type of spirit?
yes.
if you're looking for the early 90's sound (donnington) it's the pup dave used for the concert.
for the 80's you'll need to roll down the gain a bit and set the EQ properly
but in short. yes, it will do maiden very good
It'll do Maiden, but not as well as a Bare Knuckle VHII

World, that's early maiden in a can..
or should i say in a bobbin?
Haha, thanks for the answers mates..It doesn't matter that it's not exactly the same kind of tone, because that wasn't really what I was looking for in the first place.. I chose a JB for my upcoming guitar because I know it's versatile and I love the tone of it, and if it's good enough to play some maiden covers, then that's just a extra plus. Weird enough, I actually want to play the old school kind of metal, opposed to most my age who want's to play the downtuned heavy music.
Not only can it do metal but roll the gain to be very mild or just clean, put your pickup selector in the middle with a Jazz in the neck, tune your guitar to an open G chord (like Keith Richards) and start playin' some Stones. No joke. It sounds sweet as hell.
Well, it is that combination I'm getting, so I guess I'm in for a treat?
I hope I'm in for a treat when I get my Custom
Up The Irons!!!
Ok my personal opinion.
The JB will give you a tight lead singing tone with a low end crunch and high output. If thats heavy metal to you then yes.
I dont know where the JB stands with the Duncan DIstortion.. could someone tell me?
I personally thought they are close. But the Duncan D brighter and crunchier because of the ceramic magnet. While JB is more balanced between metal and a rock and roll.
The iron maiden strat has a JB jr. in the bridge and they've used JB's so umm..yes.

that doesnt mean d!ck
the JBJr doesnt sound exactly like his big brother in the 1st place, hasnt been used in the band untill janick came in AND that guitar wasnt designed untill after the Brave New World record.
besides.. they (dave actualy) hasnt used JB's till fear of the dark (ON RECORDS. live, it's an entirely diferent matter)

Back in the good 'ol days when I walked 5 miles to school (uphill..both ways...through 3 feet of snow) and had to listen to Maiden on a ALBUM ( those are the ones that look like BIG black CD's made of vinyl)...they used DiMarzio Super Distortions...then Mr. Fancy Pants from Scandinavia gets in the band and everything goes to $hit

I stuck the needle in my teeth, hooked up some speakers, spun it on my first finger and then I walked REALLY fast (thank God 78's were long gone by then)

i think the DD is has a thicker low end, but the high-mids are harsher than the JB. if there was a pickup with the low end of the DD and the high-mids of the JB, id never need anything else. both are great pickups though. the DD is more inclined to thrash metal and stuff like that, and the JB does a better NWOBHM kinda tone. both are pretty versatile and can really do anything you want, but for the kinda sounds im looking for, thats the impression i get of each.
both sound great for maiden stuff btw. i just need to find a good dave murray lead tone-like neck pickup. all smooth sounding like that but still asskicking. i might try the DDn one of these days, might do the trick.
