I just noticed that they both use a Boss DS-1. Satch with his Marshall and Vai with his Carvin. Do they use stock DS-1's or modded? And if they are modded, who modded them? I'm thinking of just buying a Fender Hot Rod and running a distortion pedal through it, along with a bunch of other pedals. And if these two gentleman get their distortion via a stomp box, then I'd like to look into that instead of throwing down big bils for a Mesa.
I know that Satch gets some of his OD tones from the pedal, but also leans pretty heavily upon the amp for drive. I would assume Vai is the same.
Hmm.. Robert Keeley has advertised his DS-1 mod with a menton of Vai.. I'll look up a link..

Via's unit are modded by Robert keeley, but you should try Stratdeluxer97 firts...his mods are cheeper and lots better IMO
I found it wayy too quickly..

Yeah Vai has a Keeley Ultra mod on his DS-1. I used to own that pedal and wasn't very impressed with it and sold it. I find a tube screamer to be much more useful.
I use the keeley modded ds-1 that they use and its awesome its great for lots of music and its 1000 times better than stock
I don't think you'll get that tone if thats the one you are looking with hat pedal and HRD. That tone comes from the pedals effect on his high gain amps.

With Satriani you might. Until the JSX he used the DS-1 into a clean channel for his tone. Vai, probably not.
the last satch show i went to in pompano beach last october he was using a peavey XXX with a DS-1 for those tones.
Yup, Satch is still using the same old stock Japanese Boss DS-1. He owns two of them. Recently, Steve Vai gave him a Keeley Modded DS-1 but as far as i know, he's still using the same old DS-1.
i guess that the japanese models are the best outthere, i have a normal one and its really cool, i know it sounds bery cool in every amp i own... a johnson bass amp and my crate, dont even ask me why it sounds nice on the bass amp but i`ll take a wild guess that the frecuencies are not that high as a normal amp would sound.
cheers JB
Vai uses a Keeley DS1 (there's some close-up shots of it during quot; The Animalquot; on the Astoria dvd) running for a light crunch/boost into his Legacy, which produces most of the distortion.
Satch used to use an old DS1 into the clean channel of a Marshall 6100 30th Anniversary head for his sounds and the Live in SF record/dvd is almost 100% that sound with a few spots open for cleans or added effects. Now he's using a Peavey JSX with various pedal combos. I did see some pics of it somewhere and I do recall seeing a TS808 and a Zakk Wydle overdrive (!) on there but I dunno what his new rig is actually running at this point.
I used to own a Keeley DS-1 Ultra and it was MILES away from the stock version. Killer pedal but not really my sound... I tried a modded BD-2 and that was much closer to what I wanted but still didn't quite get it. The final replacement (I hope) is a Fulltone OCD and it'll be here in a week!
