Does offer a pickup, off the shelf or custom, that combines the heat and the harmonics of the Duncan Distortion with the fluidity of the Alnico II Pro? I have tried the JB and like it a lot but the tone curve is a little bit too dramatic and I wanted more output, which is why I went to the Distortion for my Carvin CT6. I am just curious if SD offers anything like the distortion that has some of the sweetness and the fluid “no-attack” sound of the Alnico II Pro?

Custom Custom would come the closest. I think some of the other guys here would recommend that too.

Custom Custom is the closest to what you describe in a stock pup. For a little work or money a JB with an A2 is sounds nice. Someone had a clip a while back.

Well, why not try this...get an aph-1, and a DD, make the hybrid you want, sell the other on ebay. It probably wouldn't be a bad hybrid either, with the warmth of the aph-1 and the attack of the DD. (aph-1 with a large ceramic?)

Thanks for the advise. I hear a lot of good things about the custom custom. I just went back and took a listen to the sounds clips on the website again and the CC has a lot of what I'm looking for. There are just a few potential issues with it. Maybe I'm looking too hard with my eyes at the numbers and not enough with my ears. I want something that has similar output to the DD and JB. By the numbers the CC is a weaker pickup. I also don't want to loose the harmonics that the DD and JB have. I might be looking for a magic pickup. But what I really want is a pickup that I can tweak my rig, roll back the volume on my guitar and sound like slash. BUT still crank up the gain and volume to sound like Zakk and get those incredible pinch harmonics. I run a Line 6 PODxt Pro through a Mesa Boogie Simul 2:90 so I have a LOT of versatility with my rig to make up the difference. Thanks for the clip info quot;WITH FULL DISTORTIONquot; I'll try to find your post. Here is another silly quesiton. I have heard a DD is just a JB with ceramic magnets. Would there be a difference between a CC and a DD with Alnico 2's in it?

The JB, Invader, and DD have 44 (I think) gauge wire whereas the Custom series has 43 (I think). In any case the gauge is different, contributing to different tones. Some say that although the custom has lower resistance it is actually a hotter pup than the JB. So don't let the hard numbers get you like they so often do me.!

You might be thinking of the Duncan Custom. Even thought is has a lower resistance which is a measure of how much wire is on the pickup it is actually hotter overall by virtue of the stronger ceramic magnets I think. I like the sound of the custom custom it's nice and sweet but I think the output will be too low. I might give the Duncan Custom a go but I don't think that will be exactly what I am looking for either. It's not as harsh as the distortion but it's not as sweet as the custom custom.

Anybody know where those JB A2 clips are?

^^ nuntius has some, PM him
