My JCM 800 doesn't have an effects loop so I want to use the Line Out on my Hot Plate. I just wanted to know though, is it okay to run it into a really clean amp and not a power amp? Also, from the Hot plate line out to the effects, I would use an instrument cable, not a speaker cable, right? Thanks!
If I get this right, you want to run a speaker cable from the speaker out on your amp, then effects after the speaker out on the hotplate via instrument cable, then another cable from your effects to your speaker cab?
If that's correct, that's a sure fire wire to destroy your amp, all your pedals, and possibly your speaker cabinet.
No, more like this
Amp speaker out -gt; Hot Plate Input Hot Plate out -gt; Speaker Cab
Then on the Line out of the actual Hot Plate -gt; instrument cable -gt; effects -gt; Second (Clean) Amp

That'll work just fine. I'd suggest having the FX be totally quot;wetquot; (no uneffected signal) if possible.

oh okay, that makes more sense.
Another question:
Is it correct that a hot plate will alter the amps sound (And I don't mean volume-wise now)?
thanks

Yes. Partly due to the F-M curve but also because its impedance curve doesn't really match that of a real speaker. As a result, what passes through to the speaker isn't quite a lower-amplitude version of the input. At moderate attenuation levels (8dB or less) the effect isn't too pronounced and a tweak of the amp's EQ can often get you where you want to be. IME, at 12dB or more the tone change is more pronounced.
thanks
