Ok guys.. I have a birthday coming up. Usually, I just get money... this year is no different. But I am at a crossroads, and was looking for some input. Now, I still have $520... by the end of the month, I expect to have roughly $750 whatever my parents want to spot me. Now... I don't know whether I should buy a new guitar or a new amp. If I got a guitar it would probably be an LTD Ec-400... and if I got an amp; the amp I have now would go towards a cab. BUT.. whichever one I don't get for my birthday, I get for Christmas. My current train of thought is since the amp is a bigger part of the sound, I should just get the guitar now and wait and get a really nice amp.... I'm sure by now I've probably lost you with my needless elaboration.. but thanks for any help.

here's what you do ... take your guitar to a music store and play it through all of the amps you'd consider buying ... make note of which one(s) sounds best and why ... then, pick up one of their guitars that you'd consider getting and play it through an amp similar to what you already have and make note of which ones you dig and why ... then play those guitars through the amps you tried and see if the combo of new guitar new axe is dramatically better than either your guitar through a new amp or a new guitar through your amp ... see if that helps you decide

is there something specific about your current guitar and current amp that you want to improve? ... i mean, you could consider swapping out pickups and saving the rest of the money until you know what nextpiece of killer upgrade gear you want most ...

also might help to know what kind of music you play and if you are in a band, etc ....

good luck and have fun

You might also consider going with a combo, instead of automatically going for a head/cab setup.

1. Most of the amps I've considered are hard to find/used. (Mesas/Laneys)

2. I'm prolly gonna be able to swap pickups in my Warrior regardless of what path I take.. but the amp sucks at any speed. I also have been yearning for a fixed bridge.

3. I play mainly metal and hard rock... and am not in a band ATM, though I jam sometimes with friends.

i would go for a Mesa combo like a recto verb. They're easier to pull around and they have great sound. In fact I think someone on this board is trying to sell one for about $950 shipped. Half stacks are nice but they're a pain to lug around. If you get a 2x12 combo of some form you can push enough air with it, let alone it's convenience. AND being able to get a Mesa NEW not used. Let mom and dad put out for the guitar at xmas, get a job this summer and throw some better pickups in the guitar you have now if they suck.
