Be serious now... if you could have as many as you liked (money is not an issue), how many would you have, and why?
My heroes are Joe Perry, Rick Neilsen and Ace Frehley - I am thinking 100-125 if things go well.
around a dozen
Enough.
Every time I see that picture with Slash sitting with all those guitars, I notice how happy he is. I figure, if I could have a couple thousand, my only problem would be which one I wanted to play. Most of them would be museum like guitars, nothing I'd play. But I'd still want a couple hundred to play.
Around 10-15, if i had the money i think i'd stop around there, with maybe 8 or so amps.
I said ten to fifteen. right now the guitars I'd like to add to my collection are Heritage les paul gold top, gibson blueshawk (currently in the market), martin acoustin, Heritage Eagle, and an Jackson RR5.
I WOULD have thousands: One of each model that in any way influenced music today (would be about a hundred to a hundred and fifty), one of each quot;Top of the linequot; and quot;Standardquot; Model from everv major and/ or coveted and /or boutique manufacturer (easily 2-3k guitars in itself), One of each model USA Jackson ever produced in each paintjob ever produced on a USA Jackson, the same for Charvel (another 2k guitars)....
Oh, and each once as a collectors condition (Should I wish) and as a Player
Slightly Greedy? No, guitars are my life, that´s all
I used to Really want tons and tons of guitars. And at one point I had 26 (not alot compared to some, but way more than anyone person really needs). But Now all I really want is Three electrics that I really love, and One or two acousitcs that I really love.
I've owned Way to many guitars to even start counting off. And no matter how many I owned There was always One or two that got played constantly and the other just collected dust. So I've gotten rid of most of my Guitars over the past two years (Since my daughter was born).
So I've just decided that Anymore than Three electrics and two acoustics is way to much. That many is probably two much.
Its kinda greedy to own so many guitars and never use em. So What I started doing was just anytime I meet sumone who plays (and is good), But doesn't have a Decent guitar. I'de just give em one a mine. Seems alot better for sumone who will actully use it to own it, than for me to just hang onto it for no reason.
And right now I'm down to about 4 electrics (only two of which I really like), and One acoustic (which I really love). And I still feel like I've got more than I need.
If I could get rid of the Two electrics I hate (which I'm trying to do right now), and Just get one more electric I really loved. And possibly another good acoustic I really loved. I'de be done. I just want A couple guitars I play all the time, and nothing more.
Its alot easyer to focus on the MUSIC when your not constantly worring about how many guitars you got, or which you like better. Or what you wish you had.
Most great players are always identifiyed with one or two specific guitars. And theres a reason for that....Ed
I already have 2 Les pauls and 2 acoustics.
I won't get rid of one of the acoustics, the korean black because it's my first guitar... sentimental the fishman because it's my guitar from Aberdeen where I spend some jollygood time.
The Epi is my first electric and is about to receive a serious make over, so I wanna keep it. And the gibson is just the exact guitar that I wanted since I've been scratching guitars and it sound very nice to my hear.
My gear is a little bit redundant but I really enjoy it and they all got different tuning.
I guess unless I am really improving my skill and finally achieve my holly quest to form or join a band, I'd like only one more guitar. One that would bring me a new experience playabilitywise, like a tele or an esquire.
i have to agree with 'Low_fidelity2100'.
i think that it would be good to identify with the music and not so many toys. i think though that no more than 5 is ok.
i have been playing for around 20 years and had only one guitar till recently i got one made from USACG ( which is great by the way).
i was telling my wife that i have dreamed of having a bunch but then as i thought more about it i think that they would lose the magic they had if i had so many. You know what i mean?
Like that one Guitar that i had for so many years i learned to milk every ounce of tone from. If i had many guitars maybe i wouldnd pay so much attention to getting alot of the tone from my fingers and not from my equipment.
I learned to make modifications to it and since it wasnt such a good guitar i messed with it alot.
To answer the question i would like to own:
1) Van Halen Copy , that i would make like his old striped guitars. He was my favorite guitarist ( and still is) so it is kinda a dream of mine. has magic in it. i wanted to BE VAN HALEN SO BAD. I learned how to play so much like him at a time i had his vibe to my playing. That would be so cool to make a guitar like his to play all his stuff on. I have to do this project in my lifetime!
2) My mahogany body strat with one-peice maple neck. sounds great!
3) A Standard vintage spec ( 54') Strat
4) a really nice Les Paul. NOT the new crap. sorry. Maybe a vintage reissue.
5) a nice Martin Acoustic for when i am feeling LED Zeppy....or a nice Classical guitar. those have a beautiful sound as well.
That would make me happy and still let me put magic in them i think. i dont know if that would be too many to take away the mojo.
its all about the mojo in the end i think.

I am thinking what great heroes those are.
I don't have a target. If money was no object I'd just buy all the ones I liked. I can understand why those guys amass such big collections.
I voted 31-50......after that you're getting into a situation where you're just looking at cases in storage. However, I'd make those 50 guitars the absolute cream of the crop, and EXACTLY what I would want to pick up and play. Not one turd in the bunch.
I'd say 6-10 but that would mean that I have too many now.
For me these days, having a variety of gear is about variety, not so much quantity. Three of my PRS guitars are pretty similar--if I had it to do again, I wouldn't have bought them all. They're all have some differences in construction so at least they vary in more than year and color but the real reason I hold on to 'em is that I'm too attached to give any of 'em up.
Back to the variety thing, having more than one guitar/amp has become more about having a palette than a room full of stuff. I'm less inclined to hold on to quot;redundantquot; gear than I used to be. If something's not getting played quot;regularlyquot;, I'm not so inclined to keep it. You might have noticed I've been selling off some amps lately.
From a practical standpoint, I don't have the time to do proper maintenance on more guitars than I have now. Here in Colorado, I have do as many as 4 setups a year on a guitar to keep things in tip-top shape because of the swings in temperature and humidity. Every minute I'm tweaking a truss rod is a minute that I'm not actually playing and my playing time is limited enough as it is.
In reality, I have about a half dozen guitars that get played regularly and most of the others are quot;specialtyquot; instruments like my bass or Steinberger (for travel).
i think i'll stop at 100...yeah right...however many i want to own is the best answer...the more the better, i just love the damn things lol
-Mike
An acoustic, a bass, and three electrics is all I plan on owning.
I wasn't sure where to vote. I'd say between 50-75.

Yeah right!!! Les Pauls alone buddy, Les Pauls alone!

3 ibanez jems (different types and maybe more than 3)
1 Ibanez universe
1 Fender Standard tele (custom shop)
1 Fender Standard Strat (custom shop)
5 various Prs guitars
1 BlackMachine B2
1 peavey woflgang (top of the range ofcourse)
1 suhr (any type)
1 telecaster type warmoth variax
1 stratocaster type warmoth variax
1 roland equiped strat
1 Gibson new Digital/analogue les paul guitar
1 Gibson les paul
1 Gibson sg
1 Custom made 8 string guitar
1 Custom made Universe with a hardtail
1 Custom made Jem with a hardtail
1 Semi acousic electric (epi 335 or something)
1 Floyd Rose redmond series model 5
1 Martin acoustic
and id probably find room for something else, i think those along with what i already have would suit me perfect.
I want to own 2 to 3 guitars someday .... 12 is just too freaking many. What am I? Touring pro?
