I always use quot;Dr Stringfellowquot; or GHS Fast Fret after playing and I get alot of life out of all my strings..With that being said,I've been using D'Addario XL and EXL strings forever..These strings are the most consistent, intonate great, stay in tune, and sound great, and are priced the best of most of the other strings I've tryed....And I've tryed most of the other brands...
Wiping down your strings really is the only way to squeeze more life from them....
Knucklehead strings: 4 shows, 2 months, and counting. Still aren't dead yet! And they clean off really well.

The key being quot;Clean off very wellquot;....As I recommend highly also!
S.i.t.
Out of all the more popular stuff (GHS, D'Addario, EB, DeanM, Fender, etc) I've had the absolute best luck with Gibson brand strings...Brite-Wires in particular. I hardly ever break one, and the tone lasts for quite some time (and I rarely wipe them down). With the others I mentioned I'm constantly breaking strings at the saddle, or when bending.... not so with the Gibsons...the new Gibson quot;Les Paulquot;(Pure nickel) strings I'm trying also seem to be holding up quite well so far on my Hamer.
They've been making strings longer than anyone, so I guess they should know a thing or two?

The most important factor we're all leaving out though,is body chemistry...The guy with alot of salt or acid in his sweat is going to go through strings quick compared to a guy that doesn't have the same problem...
I'm constantly wiping off my hands and my strings after songs...It helps, plus I own like 9 guitars and I hate re-stringing!
As Stratdeluxer rightly says, GHS Fast Fret is the way to go, especially with acoustics.
As far as the strings go, I have used Fender Super Bullets, Ernie Balls, and whatever comes stock on Epiphone Les Paul Customs. I must say the Epiphones were by far the worst, urgh. I'd say that Fender Super Bullets were the best for me, and I have really really bad sweaty hands.

True John..but's also relative to the individual..in that I mean..if I'm busting up X, Y, and Z brand strings all the time, and brand A doesn't...then I've found something better ...regardless if it's sweat causing the problem or aggressive playing, etc. I don't play any differently or sweat any differently with different brand strings is what I'm getting at.
Now if were comparing Guitarist A to guitarist B...using the same brand of strings...that would be different.

I'm talking specifically about how the strings hold up as far as the clean vs rusty factor....I very rarely break a string unless I wait too long to change them, then it's my own fault....
does GHS Fast Fret really help? and does it make them quot;smootherquot; ?

Ahhh OK. I misunderstood you, sorry. Def cleaning them often helps. I never do it tho
I've had some wicked breakage problems with D'Addarios in the last eight months or so. Most of the plain strings are losing the ball end...for whatever reason the wraps come undone on the unwound strings when I'm stretching them. It's really annoying too...I'd restring three or four guitars in an afternoon and bust four or five strings!
So I've moved back to Ernie Ball's which are always consistently decent. Years amp; years ago I went through a Markley Blue Steel kick and I remember liking them a lot for rock stuff. They lasted a LONG time and they were pretty bright. I threw a set on the Alveraz acoustic a few months ago and liked 'em...I should try the electric strings again but I've got like 30 packs of EB's here, that should last a while!

The only time I'd break strings was with my Gibson SG right at the sharp pointed sides of the bridge saddles...I put Graphtech saddles there and have never broken a string on this guitar unless I wait to long between string changes....
I've not had any issues with D'Addarios and I'm hoping it's just that you've got some bad batches or it's something with your guitar and the D'Addarios?
I also use GHS Nickel Rockers,Pyramid Strings,DR Strings, and GHS Boomers on rare occasion...
I think DR's last the longest. They're wound very tight. I don't use them though...I use D Addarios.

Lew....Is it me or are the DRs easier to bend and have less tension compared to the D'Addario?

Hi John! You think so? They seem a little stiffer to me but I dunno. A buddy of mine who tunes to E flat will only use DR's because he thinks they don't sound as flabby when he detunes. I've only used them on my acoustic guitars...I don't bend to many notes on those! The DR's do seem to retain thier brilliance longer when I use 'em on my acoustics...I just can't see paying double $$$ for them. Like you, I like D'Addarios just fine...and they're cheaper. I kinda like new strings and change them fairly often. Lew

I put locking tuners on all my guitars for this very reason .
Fast fret does work...cleans off the strings...makes em much smoother.
Body chemestry does make up for a lot though. My buddy tim's got sweaty palms...we call him the palmster. He goes through strings faster than anybody I've ever seen. By the end of a week his unwounds are like razor blades. Eesh.

At least you don't call your buddy Rosey Palms!
I've found D'Adarrio's to fare the best, but I have yet to try SIT Strings. My current set has been on for one show, 1 month, and still sounds great. I play very often, too.
I do use Fast Fret, however, which probably helps quite a bit.
