Hi Guys,

Whats the main difference between the two? Also im relatively new to the world of pedals so can anyone explain to me how to properly set up a pedal? Also how to power one of these bad boys? My reason being is i want to be able to play my amp as it only has one channel on clean but use the ts to create a quot;second channelquot; that has distortion in it, allowing me to switch back and forth. Is this possible or will it not work? I'm looking at the ibanez ts series because after reading up on them from here and around the net they seem to have a very good reputation. I am seriously planning on getting one very soon once i have all the details figured out. So ig uess i wrote this in a jumble so i'll write the questions i have in order.

1. Whats the difference between the ts808 and the ts9?
2. How do i properly set up a pedal, keeping in mind that it wil be the only pedal being used for now at least.
3. HOw will i power the pedal? I've read batteries of some kind or an adaptor? How does that work out?
4.Will my whole clean channel distortion idea work well at all? Or am i not understanding the idea of a distortion pedal properly?
5. Anything else i may have missed please feel free to let me know.

Thanks A whole bunch guys in advance!

Oh ps on a rather long side note: another reason why im interested in pedals is because my friend put some pedal infront of my crap amp and it made the world of difference in tone! IM not sure what he was doing as he was just using my lame amp but it sounded so much better than me just plugging straight into the amp.

Oh and one mroe thing to keep in mind im not looking for metal distortion, i guess i have it a bit confused i'm looking for a classic rock type of distortion, i dont realy need that chugging metal scoppped mids type of sound.

I think you're better off with a good distortion pedal to have that quot;2nd channelquot;. The TS9 and TS808 would not give you a quot;chug chugquot; sound. Most players use it as a boost to an already overdriven sound. Or for blues.

If you can get a Guyatone FLIP Drive, try that one. It's awesome. You can get pretty heavy with it if you crank up both the volume and drive.

hmm im strating to get the idea of the ts sound, hmm would you guys say the boss ds-1 or ds-2 be mroe appropriate for what im looking for? As the distortion unit can be adjusted to get what i am looking for and more if need be. Where as the ts will probably only give a boost to my sound and not add distortion? Oh also although i may have this idea down i sitll have no clue about the rest of my questions.

i find the ts-9 to be a pedal that really doesnt retain any clarity of your guitars true tone. it adds a huge snarly unpleasant mid sound to it. keep in mind this is subjective, lots and lots of people love the ts-9. I just find it makes my guitar not sound like my guitar. I like pedals that make my guitar sound like my guitar, just distorted.

My personal favorite is the marshall jackhammer overdrive/distortion because with the settings i have on it it just sounds like my guitar but distorted if that makes any sense.

my best recommendation is to play with the pedal in a store through a setup like or the same as your own. I have a tubescreamer but it doesnt ever get used.

1. Whats the difference between the ts808 and the ts9? I dont know.2. How do i properly set up a pedal, keeping in mind that it wil be the only pedal being used for now at least.

Just plug it in, play with the knobs until you find a sound you like and eq the volume between it being off and in use

3. HOw will i power the pedal? I've read batteries of some kind or an adaptor? How does that work out?

batteries work but i'd recommend an adaptor because as batteries die they slowly drain the tone. also if you accidently leave the cord plugged into the input section of the pedal it will drain the batteries EVEN IF IT ISNT ON OR IN USE (keep that in mind, before i figured that out i used up LOTS of 9 volts)

4.Will my whole clean channel distortion idea work well at all? Or am i not understanding the idea of a distortion pedal properly?

It will as long as you are careful not to add too much gain and make it sound gross and as long as you have the volumes carefully set so as not to have a huge drop or rise in volume.5. Anything else i may have missed please feel free to let me know.

see above post

and keep in mind tubescreamers are LOW gain pedals. they just add a bit of crunch and dont actually give you an all out distorted sound unless you are using an amp that is already being pushed hard.

The difference between the TS-9 and the 808 is a certain chip...the original Tubescreamers had the 808 chip. Most Tubescreamer quot;expertsquot; feel that chip is better.

In my opinion it depends on what you want to use it for. I tend to play Marshalls with a pretty decent amount of gain already on tap...I then like to use a TS9 as a quot;boostquot;..it adds some midrange, loses some bass, adds a little gain (or a lot, but I set it up for not much gain), and generally just makes the guitar cut rhough the mix better. Gary Moore is a prime example here...

If you are using a fairly mild amp, like a Fender tweed/blackface, or a Vox or something...and playing more of a classic rock or blues based type music, I can see why people like the 808 better...it's a bit quot;warmerquot;, and doen't mess with the natural tone of the amp quite as much (though it does to some extent). Stevie Ray is a prime example here.

If you are looking to basically quot;add a distortion channelquot; to your rig, I would suggest something besides a Tube Screamer. Either a modded DS-1, the aforementioned Marshall peds, Barber direct drive or some other quot;boutiquequot; pedal. Most of the BOSS pedals sound pretty bad without a mod when used all by their lonesome

The 808 has two lowered resistor values in the output stages and a different opamp...Otherwise both pedals are the same! Add in some quot;hypequot; and component tolerences and that's the difference people hear between the 2 pedals...Alot of hype mostly though..

An overdrive untit like a Tube Screamer will color your overall fundamental tones less than the JackHammer which is a higher gain distortion pedal...Yes the TS has the midrange hump. Some love it and some hate it..I Love a TS9 and or the 808,but I mod mine..

I will recommend 3 pedals for you:

1. Marshall Shredmaster (my #1 pedal)
2. Digitech HotRod

and, as I mentioned above...

3. Guyatone FLIP PD-1 PowerDrive (9V)...

it has 1 12ax7 tube. The best overdrive I've ever used.

1. the ts 808 is a little more transparent
2. with a new pedal, I usually start out with all the knobs about halfway, then adjust from there. I end up setting the volume so that it's a little louder than the quot;flatquot; volume, so the pedal gives a slight boost
3. batteries or a power supply - but since you're keeping it simple, batteries are fine
4. it'll work fine - there are plenty of players that use this method
5. the one thing you haven't mentioned is your other gear, playing style, etc.

other players may like distortion more, but I find OD pedals more usable - you set TSs as a clean boost or an overdrive. yes, they have a mid spike, but when you're soloing, that's what you want.
