I'm a big fan of Freddie King. He's my favorite of the three Kings.

Anyone know much about his gear?

-about all I know is he originally used 56 Les Pauls and then changed later to ES345-355 type guitars. Y'know how an ES sounds like a banjo when played unplugged and then sounds totally different plugged in? -Freddie somehow got a lot of the unplugged character of his guitars to show through in his tone. It's a very unique sound.

Does anyone know if his early recordings with the Les Pauls have the same sound as later?

Apparently he used a thumbpick and a metal fingerpick, which may explain the attack gets. Amps were twins and quad reverbs, apparently.

So, anyone have anything they can add?

Good questions, and you seem to have all of your info correct.

Fortunately, just this afternoon I listened to quot;Just Pickin'quot; , an out of print cd of his two all instrumental LP's. Yes, there is a difference in tone between the Les Paul (a gold top with P-90's) and his ES-345, but it's not radical. I think that much of his tone came from his picks and his VERY aggressive attack.

The only thing I can recall reading about his gear is that he used to have the treble on '10' and played incredibly loud.

That might be BS, but that's the best I can do!
