OK, so I've got a Mesa/boogie traditional-sized 4X12, and its served its purpose very well for the past few years, but lately I've been wanting to change around a few things with my setup.

I for the most part like the Vintage 30's in my amp, but at times they seem a little harsh. I've been considering swapping out the speakers, but it seems like it might be more trouble than its worth, and (frankly) more expensive than I can afford.

I've been looking into speakers, and the two that have caught my eye are the Celestion G12h-30, and the Eminence Red Coat Wizard (a 75-watt speaker based on the g12h-30). I've also been considering selling my mesa cab and just getting an avatar cab, but I'm worried that it might be a bit of a downgrade as far as quality of the cab goes. I know there are a lot of people on here that have used avatars, so if anybody could give me some input on their experiences with these cabs, it would be greatly appreciated.

I dont really care about brand names or anything, only about quality and construction, so I'm open to any other suggestions as well.

The Recto's are awesome cabs. I'd leave it stock if I were you.

I have an avatar G212 custom with a v30 and g12h30.
Its a good cab. But Lacks a bit of bottom end that I would like.
I dont really have much more to say, because my cab experience is limited.

Since you're playing a Krank, I assume your style requires high volume and some serious amount of bass. That's why I'd rather keep the Mesa cab and try changing only two speakers first, for a model that complements the Vintage30's. Others have more experience in this field but I've heard that the V30 G12T-75 combo is very popular.

I just bought a pair of Mojo British speakers (g12h30 clone and greenback clone). I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but I love the country of origins. If they sound great, I'm going to use them in my new amps.

I actually tend to tame the bass on the krank a lot, its typically around 4 to 5 or so. I've got both a Mesa cab with V-30s and a marshall 2x12 with G12t-75s in it, and I've tried it out with both of em.

I like the pronounced midrange in the vintage 30s, and the quot;bitequot; they add to my rhythm playing, but like I said, sometimes they just sound a little too harsh and sterile.

The G12t-75s are great all-around speakers, and I like their more relaxed feel, but sometimes they feel TOO relaxed.

My tone changes depending on what band I'm playing in too...right now I'm in two. The first is a sort of alternative rock group with late 90's grunge overtones. When I play in there, I tend to tame the gain a bit, and keep my guitar tone a little more subdued.

The second is a progressive hard rock/metal band with heavy influence from bands like dream theater, opeth, porcupine tree, and symphony X. When I'm in there, I tend to krank the gain a little more and go for a more in-your-face agressive sound.

I saw on the avatar website that a popular combination was 2 V-30s and 2 G12h-30s, so I'll keep that in mind when i'm trying to decide.

well, if you think the v30 is harsh and the g12t-75 is tame, then mix 'em. 2 v30's 2 t-75's. I've heard they work well in an X or criss-cross pattern.

I have a Mesa cab and didnt like the V30s for the same reasons you dont like them. Get rid of at least 2 of them on the top of the cab and get 2 governors to replace them if you like the tone but not the peircing highs. The g12t75 speakers are less in volume than either the v30 or the Eminence line so I would get a couple of manowars if you like that mix. The wizards are great too but have some highs that may be best on the bottom of the cab with the governors up top. I sold all my v30s after modding my amp and getting rid of 2 of them I still had that annoying brittle peircing crap. Now I use all Eminence and am very happy.

I'd go for an Eminence V12 set, it's a V30 without the nasty frequencies, and it's a bit smoother.

Check out Scumbag Speakers. They are accurate designs of the prerola G12M and G12H speakers from the late 60's. They are built by Weber to specs and are a fraction of the cost of the real deal. I recently helped them do a blind audio test and the results were amazing!

Exactly what i plan to do with my marshall cab, you are a 13 year old genious .

The only problem is the v30s are louder thsn the g12t75s

I'm using Weber C1230's which are reproductions of the original G12H30 design. They kick ASS. I'm not a fan of V30s at all for dirty tones of any type (I like 'em for clean though) and Greenbacks were to thin sometimes so these are perfect for me.

I do like Marshall cabs better anyway but I think you'd like the Mesa cab with some G12h30s in there.

run 2 v30s and 2 g12t75s in a X pattern!!! that's what's in my splawn cab (eminence versions though since they are made in the good ol' USA!!) and it is THE BEST setup i've ever used. i love this cab!

oh and stick them in the mesa cab since it's a better quality cab and larger than the avatar!

plenty of good answers here

as mentioned, be aware that G12H 30s are 30 watt speakers, and V30s are rated at 60 watts, so your total power handling would change, and that could be an issue

you might also consider asking Dave at Avatar, since he sells both Celestion and Eminence, and deals with these questions on a daily basis

the only Celestion I have is Dave's Hellatone 30, so I can't answer your question, but that's a cool little speaker

The Eminence version of the g12h30 = wizard @75 watts and Eminence
Eminence version of the V30 = The governor@75 watts. This combo sounds great as well as the governor and manowar.

i agree to replace just some speakers.
it's not that expensive. i'd keep the original speakers, for whatever.
why not use eminence eg LEGEND 121 speakers?

Dont sell you MESA 4x12, you'll regret it.

Avatar construction is a downgrade vs. Mesa/Marshall style 4x12.

Swap the speakers.

Plus, I dont recommend mixing speakers. You may run into problems when miking the amp. You'll not get the tone you usually have when miking a speaker.
