I've decided to take a break from the strict ascending/descending scalar type patterns for Part 3 of Warm Up Tips, since several forum bros have asked me about finger strengthening and hammer on/pull off exercises.
The included exercise has a little bit of everything: finger stretching, finger strengthening, sweeping, economy picking, and hammer on/pull off all wrapped into one.
The pattern is an Add9 arpeggio pattern. Play it slowly and pretty far up the neck to begin. After playing through it four times, slide down one fret and play the same pattern. As you work your way down to the 1st fret, your fingers will be stretched further and further apart to the excruciating 1st/3rd/5th fret stretch! Then work your way back up. There are some more linear stretching exercises coming up in Part 6 or 7.
This exercise will definitely increase your appreciation for players like John Petrucci, Jason Becker, and other shred-types who can rip through this stuff at light speed.
Remember - WARM UP FIRST! PLAY SLOWLY AND ACCURATELY FIRST! OBSERVE THE NOTED FINGERING AND PICK STROKES!
Enjoy good luck!

I corrected one of the pick strokes, which was wrong in the original jpeg.
