I saw the band-The Fixx-last night. As some of you might know, there guitar player-Jamie West Orem-has been noted for haveing one of the best spanky clean tones-One thing leads to another-so I went to check out the band to see what he uses for amps
I got there before the show and noticed he had a Fender Deville and a Marshall Jcm 800. He also had a few footpedals and a furman voltage regulator. from what I could see he used a compressor, tube screamer, and a couple others like volumn pedal and 2 others-couldnt see-but it was all very simple.
he played thru a strat with stacked singles with a floyd rose-no kidding-and also an ernie ball axis guitar with split hums.
He started playing and that huge spanky clean tone came out right away thru the Fender Delux amp and the fender strat. People around me where going quot;holy hell listen to how good that soundsquot;
He also ran some of his bright clean tones thru the Marshall! he compressed his signal from the strat, pushed up the mid on his marshall head, and played some spunky cleans-one thing leads to another-I never would have believed it had I not seen it that he could get that marshall to sound that way. of course he used it for distortion as well.
As for the guitars, the strat with the floyd and stacked singles sounded good and spanky clean but the Ernie Ball Axis sounded stronger and louder and better just not quite as straty but he used it on songs like quot;Saved by Zeroquot; and it did sound killer. He had the neck hum split of course.
If this band comes to your area I suggest you check them out. Not only for all the cool hits but the tones Jamie West Orem is getting sound amazing.
It's funny when guitar nutz obsess on what tone or what gear a player is using, then it turns out to be....quot;uh, I just plug my strat into this old amp and that's it!quot;
yup Joe, real funny.....
actually, I find that alot of local bands with great tone are guitar--gt;cord--gt;amp.
He gets a most-killer strat tone that is very glassy.. good player too. That's interesting that he plays a Deville. Those amps can definitely get clean and spanky.
i think the clean tone of the deville is the best part, the distortion channel doesnt do much for me
I've gotten some amazing cleans from a mid 70's 50w Marshall (JMP I guess?)
It belonged to the keyboard player in the band I was playing in. I really
had to crank it B4 it broke up.( In retrospect i bet it had 6550's in it?)
When I quit his band he offer to sell it to me for $150. Coulda,
Shoulda ,Woulda.
ya I expected all this sneaky guitar guru stuff and instead he had things very simple and he simpley used them well. compression, delay, volumn pedal, tube screamer, and some other pedal thing into 2 realy basic amps. It realy tought me a basic lesson. and he got some of the coolest spanky tones.

Alot of truth to this, Remember Samy Hagars tone on the tune quot;High Hopesquot;? when asked how he got that blazing tone he said My guitar short cord soldano amp head-thats it.

your dead on right about that. Some great tone out of those fender combo's for cleans but to me their distortion realy kinda sucks. I would only use most fender amps for cleans myself but I'm sure somebody on here will now get pissed I said that and flame me into oblivian. Still, most pro's use a fender combo amp as their clean amp and A/B between them and a good distortion head so its not just me that feels this way.
I'm not saying fender amps are bad, I'm just saying I realy love their clean tones
