I've got a 65 regular Champ and it's a tone monster. Just incredible.

They have quite a reputation but I never thought they were as great as they're made out to be. They're cool....lots of distortion and tones in a small package. But they're not as cool as something like a 2 6V6 tweed Deluxe or tweed Deluxe clone that you can build yourself, IMO. Those amps, like all of the master volume tube amps created during the Paul Rivera era at Fender, were actually designed by an aerospace engineer and non-musician named Ed Jahns. People think they are a Paul Rivera design but I doubt they are...although Paul Rivera probably did initiate the request for thier design. Anyways: they're cool in thier way...but not magical. I feel the same way about the Concert and Twin Reverb II...also Boogie inspired products from that era made by Fender. Just my opinion. Lew

Thanks for the input guys! Lew, it's funny that you bring up the Rivera situation. I've been having a hard time getting a friend to understand that same thing. I knew that though he was at Fender at that time but wasn't actually responsable for the design. Oh well, so continues the legend of Rivera era Fender amps.

Those used Rivera-era Fenders like the Twin II do give you alot of high quality parts and amp for the money though and being handwired they make for a great platform for modifications and tweaking. Dan Torres ( ) markets some kits that really do improve the tone and performance of those amps. Just a bunch of caps and resistors and instructions for making the changes, but well thought out, IMO. I used a Torres kit to upgrade a Twin Reverb II head a few years ago and the improvement was remarkable. After the mods it still sounded a little to tight for my tastes so I ended up selling it a few months later but it did sound very good and much more open after the simple mods Torres recommended. The Super Champ seems to be the one that everyone really grooves on...alot of cool tones and a small package: always a winning combination.

Sorry guys. I thought this was a variation on the 60s amp, like the Vibrochamp. Didn't realize it was the early 80s amp.
