I use a Orange AD30HTC, which is perfect for what my band plays (classic rock).
But we do a couple few tunes that require some heavy gain that I just can't get from the Orange, and heavy gain pedals get too noisy.
I'm thinking of picking up a used Mesa Recto-verb combo, is this over kill?
Opinions?

Look into an Orange Rockerverb - it should do the classic rock thing with flair, but definitely has some heavy tones in there as well.

I don't think it's overkill, although I'm not sure how you mean that exactly. The Rectoverbs can do a great clean, bluesy grit, classic rock gain, and metal. They're pretty versatile amps and just flat out sound good.

I have a Mesa Recto-verb combo series 1. I do not think it would be overkill. The Rectoverb is very versatile. They are high gain but if you play with the settings you can back the gain way off and get just the amount of gain you need. Do you use a humbucker guitar or single coils? The gain is just right for single coils IMO and needs to be dialed back for humbuckers. They are heavy amps, I put side handles on mine to help carry it.

This might be a stupid question, but have you tried a POD or something like that? They seem to be a little quieter than a stomp box amp; might be a better money alternative.

What I mean by overkill, is it too much for just a few songs, kinda using an amp as distortion (recto) pedal.
I use hums in my guitars, Explorer PG, Strat JB, ESP KH2 EMG81.

Are these tunes original tunes or cover tunes?

That would help a lot in terms of steering you in the right direction of a non-fuzzy/noisey gain pedal.

I think you're first mistake is thinking that a Recto tone is good.Get a Rivera Knucklehead; best of both worlds.

Interesting - I had the chance to demo a KH over the weekend. I was expecting great things from it.

The cleans rocked - super warm and fat, with a nice smooth top end, but the high-gain tones left QUITE a lot to be desired. I found them quot;messyquot; sounding - super harsh midrange and bottom end flubbier than my grandma's arm fat. This only got worse as I turned it up.

I was playing Hamer Standard through it, so it sure wasn't the guitar's fault.

I agree; sounds like either bad tubes, bad cabinet, or a very abused amp, imo.

sounds like you can use some of the Fender Twin '65 RI's BONE CRUSHING HI-GAIN METAL CLEAN TONES!!

Seems like serious overkill to me.
