Do any of you guys know about a pickup based on the original JB being released? Apparently it's supposed to be an EXACT replica of the original...
Thanx!
Keith
where'd you hear that?
the only thing i know was the jb prototype with an a2 magnet.
Never knew they changed it

If you want an quot;exactquot; replica, the Custom Shop can help you out.
Though many feel that the older JBs have a bit more quot;mojoquot;, according to SD they´re wound to the same specs as they originally were....
SOOO, why do they sound different: because magnets age and become weaker and one is almost 30 years old..... same reason an original PAF sounds different than an identically speced new pickup (though PAF is a super-quot;spongyquot; term anyway)...
is this 100% true: how should I know, I don´t work for Duncan..... but I can say that the coils of my age old JBJ and a newer JB I had here match up to the Milliohm.... if we assume the same wire (very likely) and that neither was purposely wound off spec (also probable), that leaves the magnet as the only possible cause
FWIW
Where does this stuff come from?!
Define quot;this stuffquot; and maybe we can answer

I heard recently from Geo Lynch's tech that there was a Duncan pickup coming out based on the original exact JB specs...
I wasn't sure if the quot;JBquot; we all know of was an exact copy of the oroiginal or what differences the quot;originalquot; had...
Keith
I'm not saying it's DEFINITELY untrue, but is sounds like typical music-store bullsh*tting. I heard more spurious and specious rumors and outright misinformation about various lineup changes, gear specs, etc. when I worked at a music store than the rest of my life combined.
This brings me to an idea: I have a JBJ from beginning 80ies, a friend of mine has a JB from the nineties. Since there is a A5 from an old DiMarzio PAF lying around, i could swap it into the 90ies JB and test it against the old JB. May i hear a difference???

Is it worth the effort? Especially since it takes much longer than 25 years for Alnico Vs to noticeably start petering down.

Anyway, he was telling me that the new SD quot;Vquot; pickup is in two of GL's current touring guitars... the current prototype with the nickel cover is in the Kamikaze and the previsou prototype in in the Bones. He confirmed it is based on the old style of JB pickup that SD was making for Beck way, way back in the day. It has an Alnico-V magnet, hence the name.

It´s worth a try, but there´s a quot;badquot; variable: Alnico magnets can be set to different strengths (measured in gauss), even within the same type....
if the Dimarzio magnet was stronger and/or is larger, there may be no change, and you man even have a stronger magnet in there then the JB originally had.
You could measure all the magnets with a gauss meter, but that´s going a bit overboard IMO unless you want to be absolutely sure of your resulting conclusions.
But swapping a mag is always worth a shot IMO... fiddling with mags gave me the first quot;Custom 9quot; .... it´s actually a CC with an oversized A6 magnet under the baseplate in addition to the A2... but we measured it with our funky field strength devices at work, and the result is very close in field strength and positioning to what we calculated an A9 standard magnet to be Originally Posted by SQUAREHEADI was able to chat with Gerry a few minutes before the gig. AAH... Now I gotcha..... I´m pretty sure these have been available in Japan for quite some time as a quot;semi-Productionquot; pickup (Still Custom Shop pricing and sometimes wait), IIRC this is actually just the distributor (ESP) ordering CS pickups in numbers, like Jackson did with the ´78 during the first Charvel reissues phase....
IIRC these pickups are wound to the specs of the first prototypes, which of couorse differed slightly from the final production JBs that have been out for 25-30 years or something.... They´re essentially a pickup that was never made available as a production pickup, but a custom ordered wind of the prototype
At least that´s what I THINK they are... I remember the threads and so, but I´m getting old
BTW: I´m pretty sure All JBs have an Alnico V (A5) magnet save a few custom winds and experiments that have A2.... unless someone slipped on QC
But winter NAMM is next nmonth.. let´s sit back and watch the show
Wouldn't an old JB(J) be a quot;handwoundquot; pup? when did Seymour go into quot;massquot; production? Some people swear by the fact those old JBs sounded better new than they sound new today...I don't know...but I suspect it's just the age of the mag like Zerb or whomever said..or the quot;handwoundquot; vsquot; mass producedquot; variable.

Interesting point...
For that we´d need to know how exactly they used to and how exactly the do today. I think for this Evan, MJ or Seymour would be the only ones to ask...

I´ve heard this a few times as well... But I think part of it is that after 20 years, you hear things differently... For example being quot;taintedquot; by boutique equipment, changing preferences, or simply just the passage of time

Add to that all the years of hearing damage.
I just talked to MJ ...and this is kinda weird. The one made for George is called the quot;Super Vquot; pickup and yet MJ says its a JB with a different wire used and an A2 magnet...
It's Seymour's fav pickup of all...

i gotta believe that seymour's 'fav pickup of all' is the one that helps the guitarist find the tone that makes them happy
plus, by my rough calculations, the pickup you describe would be a paf in the 10K range, right?
sorry, couldnt resist
cheers

LOL...
I'm just the messenger...
She said it was a hot JB with different wire and an A2 magnet.
