Howdy Fellas,

It's been a while.

I am getting a new guitar, finally with a set of p90s. In fact, I am gonna be using the neck of my warmoth walnut strat (not that I don't like that guitar, but I already have enough LPs). I am getting a hollow t built by USA custom guitars, honduras mahogany back, quilt maple top, 4 pots, routed for the narrow spaced hardtail strat brirdge (strings through the body) and 2 p90s!

I feel like a traitor because this time somehow I decided on Jason Lollar's vintage p90s. Over the emails he was quite helpful especially because that I do not know much about p90s. Indeed, I had a hard time figuring out which one to get: Fralins, antiquities or lollars. Did I make the right choice?

Anyway wanted to share that with you guys. By the way if you have any feedback you can offer, I'd reaaly appreciate it.

Best

(Will be around more than the last 6 months! )

Dr B!

sounds like a cool project for something a little different

I've done two projects with Tommy, and he's been cool to deal with. His necks are also most excellent - the '54 contour on my last strat is terrific.

what kind of finish on the body?

enjoy

Thanks Curly,

Steve is doing mine. I'll be finishing the body myself, Caribbean Auqua blue is what I have in mind. Quilt top should look cool with that finish. Still cannot help thinking of the light brown one tho. Afterwards I'd finish it off with stew mac's nitrocellulose clear finish.

Cannot wait to get started.

You know what, during Mars' bankruptcy sale I played a custom shop fender tele with duncan p90s and a hollow body and a SET neck. It was a great guitar. I waited a little bit for its price to decrease. But guess what! Somebody else bought it. So this guitar that I am building now is sort of a substitute of the one I could not score for $850!

B

you're right, that's a great color for a quilt top

I like a natural look on mahogany - either clear or slightly tinted - rather than reddish mahogany.

there might be something similar in their gallery, so you can visualize things a little .. I know they used to have a Jazzmaster drop top with 3 P90s that looked pretty cool.

sounds like a super sweet guitar...can't wait to see the finished product!

Dr B,
Good to see you, and Im glad you'll be around more!

I have heard great things about Jason's P-90,and I have to admit...I tried a set of his Strat pickups and was impressed to say the least!

Keep us posted on the project and take lots of pics!

Thanks guys! I appreciate it.

I will keep you guys posted. In fact I intend to take pictures and such while finishing the body and assembling the guitar. I hope it won't be a disaster.

B

Good choice with the Lollars, I've heard some very impressive things about them

Sounds like a great guitar, and of course, when you get it, pics!

That sounds really cool! Let us know how it turns out!

I've got the body, and Lollar's p90s:
Am gonna take my time and am not gonna rush into finishing. The highest priority is to get it right. I intend to dye it first and after getting the aqua-blue right go into the remaining standard steps of nitrolacquer finishing.

Am excited! Wish me luck.

BTW while I am doing it I intend to keep a diary for those who wanna try it later. I know it could help!

B

I dig the body...keep us posted for sure Doc!

gORGEOUS, ALtough, that´s not my cup of tea
Q

Dr. B!!!

I swear the other day I was wondering where you'd been ....

Looks great ... I love Tommy's work. What about the neck? Is that a USACG too?

cool project

Hey Doc - did you ask Tommy for some scrap like the top to practice dyes on? He's been great about that for me. Makes all the difference in the world to dial it in right before touching your real project!

BTW - that thing is going to be a tone monster!

Chip

I wuz just gonna suggest that Chip! Dyes are tricky...that's a hella beatuy Tele bod. You're making me jones for a P90 Tele now. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the good wishes. Really!

Chip, I already got some pieces of maple to practice my dye-finishing skills on before touching the body. Got them locally, did not ask Tommy! Great suggestion that I wish I've known earlier. The maple pieces I have ain't that figured you know.

The quot;trickquot; I think would be to write down every combination (of dyes - mainly blue and a little green) on a piece of paper and associate those with the resulting maple scrap boards. Otherwise, I think I'll forget the specific dye combination.

B

Curly,

For now I am going to be using a maple/rosewood neck, either from my walnut warmoth fat/fat strat or a lone star strat that I am not using that often. But in time I think I am gonna ask them to get me a real thick (baseball bat kinda) mahogany/rosewood neck.

For now I hope it works out with the maple/rosewood neck.

B

man, those p-90s look good against that tone of wood. I would leave that baby natural rather than dye it.

Tommy might still be willing to send you some figured maple scraps... no harm in asking . Failing that, I was able to find some maple veneer pieces a Woodcrafters that worked fairly well for experiments.

Then there's the secret recipe... yep, if you don't write down each mix, you'll go crazy. (You may go crazy anyway if you're like me and have a specific color in your head that just won't pop out of the wood.)

This is probably extreme overkill, but here's a great article on color theory for woodworkers.

Hope this helps,

Chip
