Well, even though i am currently gassing over a certain schecter.... I am also looking into seven strings because, i find myself tuning down to dropped D alot to get more low end, but also, alot of the songs i play are in standard.
Do you think it is a good investment for me to get a seven string, instead of tuning to drop d most the time(for the heavy stuff).
I dig mine, though i gotta admit they don't get played as much as my other guitars. It takes a little while to get used to, and a good stepping stone is to learn a few songs from artist's who use 7's.
Play one and find out. I've seen people struggle with mine all the time, and I've never had a problem with the extra string.
Some people just have trouble wrapping their heads and hands around them. So my advice is try a few.
Note that the Ibanez one which is like 370 bucks is by far the easiest 7 string I have ever played, the thin neck makes wrapping your hand around the neck supremely easy, my H207's neck in comparison is a freaking les paul haha.
I'd say go for it, the guys from Unearth both use 7 string ibanez guitars.
I've been playing one for years now and love em. Jazz guys have been using 7 strings for a lot longer than any metal player. I only mention that to demonstrate to people how versetile they can be.
I would recomend Ebay to grab one- hell I bought one on Ebay- a Dean- for $100! I dropped in a couple of new pickups and its not a bad little guitar.
Count to 4 and have fun!

eBay is probably good...you can pickup ESP's H-series 7 strings, my H-207 has the lowest action I've played on a guitar, period...on the D string my action's probably 4 micrometers.
My H-207 doesn't set up nearly that well man, but it could probably use a fret level and some thinner strings
I ****in love mine, play it more than my 6!

lol, mine must've been done by a good set of line-workers, hahaha. I've had the frets dressed though, so that's probably why.
I had a seven string... it was cool for a while. I dont have a use for one anymore since I'm mostly a classic rock guy now, but there was once a time when a younger me was fond of the lowend of a 7. I say go for it, I had tons of fun with mine when I was younger... I sold it when I turned 18, so about a year ago.
I have a 7. Took me about a few hours of noodling to get used to. I dont play metal. But The extra strings and some alternate tuning options sure help. It might slow you down a slight bit initially due to the wider board. Then again after awhile i found my 6 stringed to be rather scrawny and thin.
