is it worth it to refret a vintage neck? or is it better to just get a new neck? How much would a refret cost on a maple telecaster nitro finish neck?
how vintage? 50's 60's? youll probably hurt the collector value.
i assume youre talking about the tele, basically if its a guitar thats gonna be played and the frets cant be dressed then a fret job is in order. any binding on the neck?
hmm...binding? You mean like freboard binding? It's a solid slab of maple, and the neck is in very good condition.
I am NEVER going to sell this guitar. Lot's of people treat gear as an investment to sell later, but im not that kind of person. It has alot of sentimental value to me and my uncle so we just want it to be in good playing shape so i can carry on the tradition.
Well hey- ya can't play it without frets! Do it.
Your best compromise is to take the guitar to a tech who has years of experience in maintaining the cosmetic integrity of an old instrument after a refret-- it'll cost, but it should retain most of the guitar's value if you did decide to sell it. But I'm with you-- play them! We'll all be dead one day.
If that neck is from the 50's or 60's i'd take it to the best pro repair shop around that has a history of repairing vintage guitars!!! Here in the toronto area The 12th Fret is the place to go for that.... where are you located in the world
