Hello there everyone.. I'm just wondering whats the kinda average action height of you people round here.. I'm currently trying to find my purfect action height but so far its alluded me, Dammit!! This poll is for action at 12th fret by the way...

I chose in the middle, but it varies from there to high depending on the guitar. I do a lot of bending, and if the action is too low I can't get under the string without it slipping or fretting out.

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. I adjust it so it's as low as possible without buzz. Since I often smack the snot out of the strings, that's not super low, though.

Same here... but it usually ends up around 1.1mm high e - 1.2mm low e... measurement taken at the 12th fret with the string depressed at the first.

gotta get those bends!! And I found that it's good to keep it relatively high to keep your hand strength up-if you're used to a mid to high action, you can play fairly well on any guitar (from my experience). If you have a mad low action, you 'spoil' yourself and it makes it difficult to play up to speed on higher action guitars.

No idea, I know I prefer it higher than most people.

Eh on my model 4, it was 1mm at the 12th fret (without the 1st fret being down). To me it was low, but not extremely. Anything over 2 mm is unplayable to my beginner's hands and considered very high.
2 to 3mm is VERY LOW??

A lot lower than it used to be... Not uber low, because I can't stand that, but not stupidly high either.

My old action height was hurting my hands when I was trying to play wide vibrato.. too much tension

Whatever action you use, don't hurt yourself. Same goes for string guage. I had to take a short break a while ago because I couldn't move my hands properly, scared the crap outa me.

My Strat: 3 mm
My Tele: 2 mm
My Heritage: 1.5 mm - my main gigging axe. Easy to shred and bend notes.
My lado 1.0 mm - Buzzes just a little bit - but perfect for shredding.

High enough to play slide and to do bends.

I like it high. The strings don't fret out on bends and i like the more rigid feel.

I like mine in the 3-4mm range. I think my Kramer is at 2mm. The rest of my axes are at 3-4mm.

i choke on anything higher than 2mm. I always thought 2mm was high. I can't imagine playing on anything higher than that. 1.5 is about as low as i will take it. The strings just don't resonate the same any lower than that.

Something I forgot to add to mine:

On 12quot;-16quot; radius fretboards, 2mm and lower are great. But get a 7.5quot;-10quot; radius fretboard and 2mm will buzz some and fret out when bending so there really is no choice but to sit higher on some necks.

Well ok guys i'm sorry if you dont agree with how I labled the action heights but thats not really the point of the poll.. i was just wondering what the average kinda action height was, thanks for the replys so far thou guys!

4-5mm usually. i keep it a bit lower on the treble side though

on my number one strat, it's pretty high. I dont have a ruler around, so I cant measure it. I go by feel. I can play slide without any rattle, and play slide hard. I dunno how to describe it. Pretty high I guess. But I can still shred on it, but I can shred on alot of guitars.

3 mm low-B, 2 mm high-e, mid string = 1mm

I like low action, but 1mm is too low but the fretboard is kinda low radius there...grr...lol

It all depends on the neck radius and the music I play. On my strat with a 7.5quot; neck radius. which I play rock, I set it at 2 mm. On my semi-hollow body with a 14quot; neck radius, I set it to 1.5 mm for blues and jazz because I bend the strings quite a bit. For my SG with P90 pickups, which also has a big radius (14quot;?), I set it at 1.2 mm for fast action but still able to bend the strings.

Pretty low, just barely under 1/16th of an inch typically, bout 3 MM or so. I just try to get it as low as possible with no buzz, cause that bugs the hell out of me.
