i've been talking to a local luthier and he claimed that the older(the ones made in the late 80's early 90's) emg humbuckers like the 85 or the 81 had a little bit more output than the ones they are making now. I didn't want to believe it but infact i was thinking the same about my 92 emg85 and my new 2005 emg 85...there's a slight difference in output between the two.....has anyone of the emg users here noticed anything similar?

I've had 81's from all over the place, time wise, and haven't ever really noticed anything. If they're in different guitars, it's not an accurate test anyway.

since all my EMGs are of newer date i can't comment on that but i think that could well be

I've read that EMG makes small improvements to their circuits over time, which is why some feel the older, 80s model pickups sound a bit flatter than the newer ones.

I donno if it's true or not though....never tested the theory myself.

I think it's very possible. To the best of my knowledge things are constantly improved especially in the world of electronics, so maybe they improved the preamp since then.

1 to both, heard it but can´t say for sure if or if not

I have an old set, 81/85 in white that have hardwired leads, not the plug in style, and I feel they sound better than some newer ones I've had.

I have an old 81 from the early 80's in my bronze warlock.

I it sounds killer if you like metal... Tho I do not.

you have 2 bc riches with EMGs in em and you dont like metal? now THATS breakin down stereotypes

And an 89 is hardly a metal pickup, I'd call it a PAF on steroids, that can be split for excellent cleans.

And the 60 is actually a minibucker.

Sure, the 1 has an 81 in it, but I never play it.I play mainly van halen and stuff, some steve vai (I say some because I can't play 22 notes per second). I honestly can't think of a cheaper way to get there than the gear im using.
