well i spoke to my tech today about adding an effects loop to my bassman for the seperate power amp, and he said it'd be a huge job amp; i'd be better off getting an EDI box, which i guess plugs into the speaker jack amp; makes it to where i can just run the speaker jack into it amp; then it into the PA amp; the PA into the cab, instead of all that work amp; then the whole dummy load thing
well i did a search amp; i can't find one, so can anyone tell me some companies that make them amp; what they're called?
bump
i think you mean a quot;DIquot; box.
with a DI box you can run it poweramp-DI box- speakers, DI box-pa ect.
from : localhost/www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/150934/
ok but will they do what i want? make it to where i can plug the speaker out to a seperate power amp to the cab without dummy loads or any of that?
oh, and i don't want any effects or coloration, just...as true bypass as possible
i dunno, do these things color your tone a lot? it seems like it'd color them less than hooking a preamp into a seperate power amp amp; using a dummy load, cuz this way you get the powertube coloration aswell
what exactly are you looking at doing? if you are spending money on a power amp and a cab why not just buy the same amp and run both at the same time.
Drew, it sounds like what you're after is simply a line out.....or are you wanting to add some type of efx...they're two totally separate things...
A simple line out is easy enough.....efx loop means managing signal levels...
let me know....
Jeff Seal
THD Hotplate,
They have a line out that is an unpowered signal that is perfect to feed a poweramp, as well as a couple of speaker outs, some tone shaping functions as well. Heard great things about this product.
ok guys, heres what i wanna do
guitar - bassman (4 ohms) - (something) - carvin 8 ohm solid state power amp - cab
a local tech told me that a DI box would be that something amp; work fine, but i don't entirely trust him
so would a DI box fit in that 'something' slot amp; work fine?
that will work only if the bassman is conected to speakers...it will go.... bassman-DI-speakers
DI-carvinpower amp-speakers.
make sure though that you have the ground lifted on the DI box when you connect it back to the speakers and that you use speaker cables between the bassman-DI-Speaker conection.
also the line out for a pa on the DI box you will probably have to get a XLR-1/4quot; cord.
so in short you are using the Carvin as a pa system.
...wow that confused the crap outta me
you're gonna hafta draw a diagram or something
is that right?
also, what do you mean by 'like a pa'?
last thing - how the hell am i gonna run 2 cables to 1 cab?
would it take the bassman signal amp; just make it a crap of a lot louder? cuz that'd be REALLY ideal, and micing is never an option, so
Its like this.... from : localhost/a paquot; is meaning that you are running the poweramp and cab like a pa system because normally with a di box you would run it to a pa system.
make sure you use speaker cables between the bassman, di, and cab. and between the poweramp and cab 2. a XLR-1/4quot; cable will probably have to be used between the DI and power amp. and with the DI make sure the ground is lifted. it will say it all in your directions.
it wont work with just 1 cab.
that would work for more volume... if you are wanting an fx loop
from : localhost/is probably more what you are wanting. besure to set the mass or hotplate ect to full so it acts as a dumy load.
this should work ive seen kirk hamnet do it.
make sure to run speaker cable between the head and attuenator and between the poweramp and cab.
Drew,
This is getting nuts. You're looking to use the bassman as nothing more than a preamp. You don't seem to care about even using it as a stage monitor and you're proposing more and more stuff (DI, power amp, cabs) tacked on to this rig.
Why not just find another amp that gives yougood tone
adequate volume
FX loop
instead of tacking more stuff onto a rig that doesn't really do it? Your Bassman power amp extension cab rig is gonna be a major PITA to move around and may or may not give you the tone you're looking for (assuming you want the Bassman's tone, only louder). Though a lot of inexpensive power amps are out there, you'll need some decent cabs (2x12 or 4x12) to get good tone. I question whether it's possible to put together a rig like that for less than the cost of another guitar amp that meets your requirements.
You keep mentioning that micing the Bassman is not acceptable but you're essentially putting together a separate PA to amplify it. Think about it...
My $0.02, IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc.
Correct me if Im wrong, but if your gonna run a DI between your Bassmans poweramp and speakers . . . isnt that gonna fry the DI and mess with the Output tranny?
In My Experience you need something to act as a load for the tranny, hence an attenuator. If you want to run the bassman as a preamp, look at the THD Hotplate, because it will give you an non powered line out. Here's a quick daigram.Bassman's speaker out -gt; THD Hotplate (Use the line out) -gt; Poweramp -gt; Whatever cab's your using
Just my thoughts . . . .

I agree, this is getting pretty out of hand. I'd recommend finding an amp you're happy with first of all, and if you guys REALLY have to be that loud, consider investing in a small PA system so you can mic up the whole band and turn everyone up evenly. That would be much better than turning up one guy, which makes the others play louder so you feel the need to turn up even more, etc. A band that has a relatively low stage volume and runs through a PA to get out to the audience will usually sound better quot;from the standsquot; as opposed to a band that just cranks their sh*t up.

I've looked, the only thing that gets loud enough are solid state amps amp; crappy blue voodoos
You've looked at everything, or you've looked at everything under $500? There's quite a difference.
Perhaps the way you EQ your amp is keeping you from cutting through as well as you could...
and ok, last question
what impedance of THD do i need?
the bassman is 4 ohms, but the power amp is 8 ohms, as are the cabs
I've been running the bassman into an 8 ohm cab cuz it sounds best that way, so I'm thinking 8 ohm, right?
