I just picked up the Detroit October 15, 1967 Cream bootleg and Clapton's tone is UNREAL! Was he playing the SG at this stage?

Absolutely. He played the SG until sometime after the March '68 shows at the Fillmore amp; Winterland in San Francisco. Then he switched to the 335 amp; Firebird. Personally I loved the SG tone much better. Glad you liked the tone too. If you haven't already, check out his sound on the live cuts from quot;Wheels of Firequot; amp; the two subsequent live CD's. Also a great bootleg is quot;Another Live Creamquot; done at Brandeis University, April '68. (all of these featured the SG, except for a cut or two on the 2nd official live Cream CD.

So, you want to know about Clapton's guitars during the Cream years?

That's probab;y the most comprehensive Cream site on the web. Excellent place for info and old pics. Also try Cream2005.com. It's mostly about the recent reunion and speculation about upcoming shows, but has great old Pics too

did ec use any pedal effects?

Wah-Wah in quot;White Roomquot;

He was using something by Wheels Of Fire. I think of that lead tone of Born Under A Bad Sign... that non organic tone. I don't know if that was the Rangemaster or not.

They were using Marshall stacks in the studio...balls out. They speeded up his lead track on one of the tunes quot;Passing the Timequot; maybe.

Jeff

Eric had ditched the Rangemaster during the BluesBreakers...I had always heard that he did use some kind of Fuzz tone during Cream...rarely live and very sparingly in the studio, but some of those tones do not sound barefoot to me...

Kind of shrill and buzzy, like a Maestro reined way, way in. I was kind of thinking of that quot;passing the timequot; solo, but I think there was something else going on.

There's these really killer pictures around, and I don't know where to find them again, of Clapton recording with the Cream stencilled 4x12 and 2 mikes on the cab- close and distant. I want to think that the cab was facing a baffle, like 2 feet away.
