there was a very similar thread regaurding changing out RR3 pickups started a little while back you should probably run a search

The Distortion/Jazz combo is what andy used in his Jackson. That setup is ultra versatile and can do everything from clean to high gain and everything in between. Of course, you won't get much of a Slash type tone out of it. For that I might suggest a CC/APH combo.

JB/Jazz would be the quot;standardquot; USA Jackson setup, versatile enough to cover all the styles mentioned... and it´s available as a set as well, the quot;Hot Rodded Humbuckerquot; set... if one should not be quite what you want, SD´s 21-Day Real World Exchange Policy will cover you with a swap for a distortion/custom/´59

And didn't Randy Rhoads himself use Duncan Distortion?

I got an RR3, I replaced my Duncan Design with a Jazz/Distortion setup, and I love it, very versatile. I wanted an extreme output guitar though, and I got it. Its amazing how much of a difference that tone control can create with the Distortion. It can be very deep, or so sharp, I mean it cut through amps with so much more volume than mine.

The Jazz is a beautiful, and I mean very warm pickup, I love it. You should enjoy this setup if your looking for a Randy Rhoads like tone. Cause the Jazz, and Distortion hits the spot.

Only thing I need to do with my RR is get the Action setup perfectly, and I'm also curious about the pickup height from the strings, any recommendations please.

wasnt randy's a distortion jazz combo? he gets a lot of different tones off of that set up

i really ahent messed around with my pickup height, im kinda not veyr happy with how those duncan designed p-ups sound so i kind of gave up on it lol sorry

get jb/jazz !! the distortion is way too hot!!!!!!

The distortion may not necessarily be way too hot. But granted the JB might be a little more versatile for Gn'R stuff.. but not really.

Distortion/jazz set is what randy used on two of his jacksons
his polka dot V had dimarzio's (super d and paf}
for your axe and tones you want to achieve
go CUSTOM and jazz
this combo will do rhoads and slash and many many more

the JB is a great pup but i personally think that the custom will cover more ground(AC/DC to vanhalen to guns to ozzy to slayer to lamb of god to napalm death
not that the JB wont do these guys but the custom will do it better

hey guys thanks for all the inpiut and help

IMO, Randy never really had quot;goodquot; clean tones...at least live...he did what everyone else did..roll his volume back...and he used so much gain and so many peds and whatnot, his sound never really cleaned up...which I actually prefer most of the time...pick soft and it's fairly clean..pick a little harder and it breaks up. Distortion pups just rarely clean up that well

If the RR3 is a bolt on neck I'd be inclined to go JB or Custom or maybe a Custom Custom for the bridge and a something a bit warmer than the Jazz for the neck spot and cleans or high gain leads...Alnico Pro...59...or such.
