I've been thinking a lot lately about when i go off to college this coming fall. I love my JS1000BP to freaking death and it's one of the most important things in my life, no kidding. I'm not to sure how keene I am on bringing that guitar to college with me. I'm fine with bringing my amp, acoustic and my other stuff. But I don't know how I feel about bringing the Satch. What if for some reason someone steals it, my room mate gets trashed or even pawns it or something. Am I being crazy and a worry wort? I know theft is a wee bit of a problem at UNH, especially with laptops. So if I am being reasonable, then I need to get my hands on a new electric. I'd like it to be similar to my Satch. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd be looking at the $500-$700 range. Dont worry about pickups, I'd prolly get a set of Steve Evolutions or the same set in my Satch.
I'm looking into going to UNH next fall any advice for additioning?
i'm in the same boat...i absolutely love my SG, but there's no way in hell i'm taking a $1000 guitar to college with me, so i'm going to get some sort of epiphone SG between now and then. i'm just going to get something cheap that can hold me over until i'm home.
don't really have any suggestions for you...maybe an RG of some sort?
Ibanez makes a JS series, do they not? Surely there's something similar in the price range you mentioned.
Maybe snag one of the JS100 guitars off Ebay? The trem on those isn't great, but it's servicable.
They're far from equivalent to the Satch models, but Godin makes great guitars that can be bought fairly cheap brand new. You should easily be able to find a good used guitar for that price, too. Just look around.
I don't know if I'd bring it to college. Especially not at first. If you get to know your roommate better and you see that your dorm is pretty secure, it might be alright. But if you're going to get something for those first few weeks, you might as well get something decent and not ever bring the good one to school. No sense in taking unnecessary risks.
Woodcutter: How long have you been playing for? Do you play a lot of Jazz/classical/blues? Those are the areas you should focus on the most. It's extremely hard to get into. I know the guitar professor there, I went to UNH's summer music program in 2004. They only take in 2 or 3 guitarists a year, the music program is quite small but great. Unfortunately, I didn't get in. Check out the Jamie Aebersol (sp?) books. Work with those books or books of that difficulty. And where are you from Woodcutter?
I play mostly blues and jazz I haven't played much classical. I have been working in the abersol jazz standards book for a year or two with my guitar teacher. I've been playing for about six years. I went to look at the school about two month ago and loved it. I got to meet somone from the music departmentI can't remember her name off the top of my head. I didn't get to meet the guitar professor because the coming weekend was the jazz festival and he was to busy.
I live in hollis NH.

That gives us plenty of reason to worry.
As a 6 year Veteran of dorm-life, a two year Veteran of being a Resident Assistant a one year as an Administrative Resident Assistant and having spent more than a few nights in UNH dorms (ex-gf went to UNH Durham) I seem to be uniquely qualified to answer this question.
Security in dorms is always a tricky proposition. Residence Life always does as much as they can to provide a safe and secure environment for the residents. It's in their best interests to do this in order to retain residents.
With that said, dorm theft does happen. However, theft is rarely a random thing.
If they don't know you have something then it greatly reduces the odds that it will ever be stolen. If your guitars are out in the open and easily seen from the hallway or window then you pretty much create a potential target. If the guitar is out of sight, whether in a case underneath your bed or on a stand with something draped over it in front of no one's going to look twice.
Roommates are an X factor. Residence Life is always interested in making sure that students get along. If your roommate and you get along and he understands and respects how you feel about the guitar then obviously nothing is probably going to happen. But you can't always count on that sort of thing.
Laptops are an exceptionally easy target for theft; they're small, they're everywhere and they're very easy to unload. Guitars can be very much if the same caliber, but just not as portable. The good thing about UNH (if memory serves me right) is that there really isn't all that much around there; a guitar being pawned is going to get noticed and will probably be very easy to recover if they try and do it locally.
Honestly, and I don't want you to take this the wrong way....but it's a mass-produced instrument that's meant to be played. You may have a sentimental investment in the instrument but for the most part you can get it out of harms way pretty easily with minor amounts of work. I would say take it to college if you can deal with the possibilities, which can be minimized pretty easily.
I would suggest waiting a few weeks until you get moved in to really evaluate the situation with your roommate. But keep in mind that your status as friends whilst rommates may not go throughout the year; if you're not at each others throats by Thanksgiving then there's something wrong.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
I took my jakson warrior to college a few years back and was paranoid about it- but i always kept it in the case (roomates or other randoms always find a way to damage stuff). I'd say that if you keep it in a hardshell under you bed you'll be fine. whatever you do, don't keep it on a stand or out in the open. i found that a ton of kids in the dorms suddenly decide to try to play the guitar when college hits and they want to come in a handle your baby all the time. keep it away and protected and you should be fine.
Woodcutter; sounds good. Keep it up with the Jazz and blues, especially the Aebersol books. For when you make your audition CD, try and do a piece by Wes Montgomary, that's the music professor's favorite jazz musician.
I live in the UK, and my mates Student accomodation was broken into only last week.
They stole his ?1500 super pc, his stereo, and too piss him off took his duvet.
Fucjking bastaards.
So watch out for your satch dude.... thats all i can say They'd pawn it for ?100 to, and some lucky bugger would pickup a nice JS1000 for about ?200.

This might mean considerably more if we knew what the hell a duvet was...

I honestly think that the UNH area is likely to work to your advantage when it comes to security. Having spent quality time in Durham I know that it's the sort of town where things don't go unnoticed, even with an entire college contained within it.
Laptops are small and easy to unload. Pawn shops really aren't prevalent in the area which leaves two options; unloading it through an online source or unloading it through one of the shops in the area, which most are smaller chain stores. Both of those can be pretty easy to monitor for activity if it's going to be sold.
New Hampshire may very well work to your advantage on this one...
i bought my viper on ebay for $300 before i came to college. so far nothings happened to it, but its good to have that peice of mind (and a nice new guitar haha)
