I have a line on a JCM 900 50 watt head AND a knockoff 4x12 cab for $430. I am not familiar with the JCM 900 so I wanted some feedback on this head and this deal. Is it worth it?
I have seen reviews on several different models of JCM 900 and I am not sure which model is being offered so let me know if there are certian models that are better than others.
Rock on.
What exact model # is the head?? I have a 2100 MKIII and LOVE IT!!! The early ones are about the only ones that are worth a damn sound wise and they sounds really good!!! Look for ones made between 1990-1992.
To tell you how much I like mine, I used to have a Marshall 2555SL slash signature (the same thing as the Jubilees everyone raves about) and I only have my 2100 now! I liked it better than the 2555!!!!
If it's a MkIII Master Volume (model 2500) or EL34 loaded SL-X (model 2500), jump all over it. If it's a Dual Reverb, then it's a matter of whether it has EL34 or 5881 tubes. The EL34 loaded Dual Reverbs (model 4500) are pretty good. The 5881 loaded models lost that Marshall mojo. The SL-X also came with 5881's late in it's second year of production.
Is it an online sale? Local shop? Get a model number if you can.
Well just try the head anyways if it 5881s, cause you might like the tone, but its not going to sound like a typical marshall tone.
I am going up, cash in hand, to check it out tonight. If I bring it home I will let you guys know how it goes. Rock on.
JACKPOT!!! It turns out that it's a JCM 900 2500 Mark III. It has Groove Tube EL34s. I could not be happier! The cab has Celestion G12s-50s in it. I don't know much about them but they say Celestion and Made in England on them so that sounds good to me.
I think I stumbled on the deal of the century. THe head AND the cab for $430!
Let me know if there are any cool mods or tricks I should think about.
ROck on.

High five, brotha. You got yourself a gem there. If you want to know more about this beast, check out my page if you haven't already. As for mods, leave it be. These things are wonderful stock. Tricks, I could share a few, some may already be on my page.
Congratulations!!
That one awesome deal you got on that. I paid, I think about 3 times that for my 2x12 and 100w slx.
JCM900's are ok but I actually prefer the DSL series Marshalls...
Damn!!!!! GREAT DEAL BRO!!!!!!!!!!!! You ripped that dude off! LOL!!!!

Which 9's you had experience with?
I see a small fanclub of these MkIII's forming here, bro.
Now I am very stoked! NOthing like the Deal of the Century to get the blood pumping. I found it on CraigsList. He was offering it for $430. I didn't even have to talk him down. Amazing.
Since there is a little fan club brewing here, fill me in on some choice settings.
Rock on!

Here's some general settings from : localhost/this for the amp I have that is the based on your amp, but the main difference is an additional pre-amp tube is added. You may need to turn the preamp and gain a little bit because my model has more gain. Erikh, I think we should include all jcm 900 mvs in the club cause I got a MKIV, which basically the same amp.
If the price was right i'd buy a 900 head myself.... been years since i tried one.....
I like the dsl a little more but for that price, I would pick it up in a heart beat. the 900s seem a little buzzy to me but only played it at low volumes. you could always probably sell it for the same amount you are buying it for so I would say go get it
Give them all to me...I'll burn them for you!

There will be no burning of any MkIII or MkIV Master Volumes. Burn all the Dual Reverbs you want.
greendy123, I agree since they are basically the same amp. The main difference is the additional gain stage in the SL-X.
Conroyfootball, the settings I use are on my MkIII page with the sound clips but I'll post them here too.
EQ settings on the amp: Presence = 2-3, Bass = 8-10, Mids = 3-4, Treble = 6-7. The Pre-Amp level is on 10. Adjust Gain Sensitivity to taste.
ErikH,
You seem to be the guru here. I am going to take my newly found treasure in for a good tune up just to make sure everything is in good order. Heck, it only cost $430, I have money left for the bench fee!
Do you have any recommendations on tubes or anything else? Brands or tubes? I want to keep this as Marshall sounding as possible so let me know. It has Groove Tube EL34s in it now. Not sure about the other tubes.
Rock on.
For power tubes gt's you got are fine, JJs are good too. For pre-amp it depends on the type of tone your looking for.
